The film "Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival": actors and roles, director

The film "Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival" in Russian, our viewers could see in 2013. Preliminary trailer interested the general public and even was nominated for the Golden Trailer Award in the category "Foreign thriller". After watching the tape caused a variety of reviews, but mostly the general view of the film John Huddles (director and scriptwriter) has developed a positive. The ribbon "Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival", in which the actors were selected quite successfully, was remembered both for his outstanding story and good cast.

Plot of the film

Events develop in the colorful places of Indonesia. The film "Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival" tells how 20 students of an international school are the last lesson in philosophy in the school year. Their teacher Mr. Zimmith (whose role was played very successfully by James D'Arcy) considers his main teaching task to make students think outside the box. He offers his students an innocent, at first glance, thought experiment. They must immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the apocalypse that has occurred as a result of a nuclear catastrophe. There are 20 students and 1 teacher. There is also a bunker hiding in which students can secure their survival. The problem lies in the fact that there are only 10 places in the bunker, and, according to the idea of the hero, played by James D'Arcy, students should logically decide which of them is worthy of a place in the bunker in order to survive the catastrophe and ensure the survival of the human race, and who Is not the strongest and must perish from the face of the earth.

The development of the conflict line

The authors of the film initially distinguish two students - a pretty blonde Petra, whose role was played by a young actress Sophie Lowe, and a student named James - he is played by Reese Wakefield. Between these young people begins an ardent student novel. At a time when they are starting to take part in the thought experiment of Mr. Zimmith with the other students of his class, it becomes clear that the teacher is for some reason hostile to this pair. He does not miss the opportunity to hurt young people, they try to manipulate them and lead them to a conflict.

According to the Zimmit scenario, students should be able to draw the correct logical conclusion and leave places in the bunker only for the best, everyone is supposed to pull out a card, which indicates the profession of his candidate and some features (genetic diseases, a tendency to oncology, sexual preferences, etc.). The film "The Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival", the actors in which they fulfilled the task set before them (portraying people tormented by the complexity of choice), shows how difficult it is to abstract from feelings, sympathies, friendly bonds and to make decisions based on logic alone .

Each hero has his own double role

In the film "The Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival" each actor has his own exclusive role, not only in the main plot, but also in the most mental experiment. The complexity of the choice to be made to the children is further aggravated by the fact that the conditions are constantly changing. For example, a student of Georgia (who was brilliantly played by actress Bonnie Wright) draws a card, which indicates that she is an orthopedic doctor. Naturally, everyone immediately agrees that such a person in the bunker is simply necessary, because without a medic, surviving in the conditions of the apocalypse will be very difficult. But after the first thought experiment collapsed, and Mr. Zimmer allowed the students to make another attempt, it turned out that the heroine of Georgia had only recently returned from a long trip, and it is likely that during her doctoral duties she might have contracted ebola. After this news, it was decided to leave the doctor, vitally necessary, as it seemed at first, to perish.

Difficult choice

A student named Utami, played by the German actress Tsinta Laura Kil, in the thought experiment, she got the role of an opera singer who, apparently, with her skills, will not do any good in building the future world by the survivors in the bunker. But it turns out that she is fluent in six foreign languages. And its value rises sharply, because, it turns out, it can help the survivors to establish contact with the rest, the same elected ones, who were rescued in different parts of the globe in similar bunkers. But a little later it turns out that in three years Utami will get cancer of the throat, and since there will not be a doctor in the team who escaped from the nuclear catastrophe, no one can remove her tumor. As a result, the girl will lose the ability to speak and will not be able to take advantage of her skills, accordingly, students come to the conclusion that there is no free space for her in the bunker. Thus, the film "Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival", whose actors perfectly act out their images, makes us think about many things. In particular, about that it is not necessary to judge a person, possessing only superficial information about him.

The brightest images and roles

Very bright and charismatic image was able to create another young actor - Daryl Sabara. He got the role of an erudite student named Chips. According to the script, he pulled out a card, which during the apocalypse meant that he was a carpenter. Since in the construction of a new world this profession turned out to be very demanded and difficult to replace, Chips easily got into the number of the elected. But during the second attempt to get into the bunker, the students discover that the hero, who was immaculately played by Daryl Sabara, is sterile.

In the last attempt, Chips gives up his right to survive Petra and decides to try to stay alive on his own, on a remote island surrounded by many beautiful girls who, like him, did not enter the shelter. The film "Philosophers: The Lesson of Survival", the actors in which they played their roles well, is full of such bright images.

One of the deserving special attention is a student named Jack, who was immaculately played by Freddie Strom. His hero - a nice young man, able to subdue the viewer from the first frame discouraging childish smile. Pulling out his card with the profession, Jack feels safe because, according to the teacher's script, he has a degree in chemistry. A chemist in the conditions of post-apocalyptic survival is a very useful character. Further it turns out that, besides useful skills, Jack is the carrier of irreproachable genetics - he has an ideal heart, healthy lungs, perfectly working brain and joints. He can theoretically live more than 100 years and at the same time become an ideal donor of sperm, which will leave behind a full-fledged offspring ready to survive and continue the human race in difficult conditions with limited resources. But over time, it turns out one detail: Jack, according to the idea of a teacher of philosophy, is gay. Then there is another unexpected turn in the plot. It turns out that Mr. Zimmith did not just make Jack's hero a young man of non-traditional orientation. He is such not only in the simulated mental experiment, but also in real life. Freddie Stroma was able to delicately show the position of the gay among straight people and the behavior of his hero after exposure. He accepts this discovery with a smile, confirms that his orientation in life is really unconventional, and encourages him to not hide this from others.

Home couple in love

The main characters, for which the viewer is going through the whole movie, is a couple of lovers - Peter and James. Their roles were played by young actors Sophie Law and Reese Wakefield. Despite his youth, both before shooting in this film already had a certain acting experience. An interesting fact is that by coincidence, the guys used to be very serious in dancing.

The perfect blonde

Sophie at an early age signed a contract with one of the modeling agencies, but soon abandoned him and gave preference to choreography. Reese also had the opportunity to work with one of the biggest and famous in Australia ballet troupes - The Australian Ballet.

Young blonde, as a college student, managed to appear in several commercials. Her first major role she played in 2009, taking part in the film "Beautiful Kate." For this work she was even nominated in the category "Best Actress" in the AFI award. She also had the opportunity to show herself when shooting the thriller "Guilty", and the picture of Blame with her participation was demonstrated in many international film festivals.

One of the main male roles went to Riza Wakefield

Rees, as well as his partner in the film "Philosophy: The Lesson of Survival," began to act quite early. At first he played episodic roles in two TV series. In 2008 he was lucky to play a major role in the "Black Ball". This film brought him the nomination "Best Actor" and was shown at many international film festivals.

The problems of the couple in love

Sophie and Reese met on the set of "Philosophers" and had to play a passionate student couple, which they did with brilliance. The image of Petra is presented as the best student, a strong and strong-willed girl with high intellectual potential. James compared with his girlfriend a little behind, but he loves her madly. Students study in the same class and, together with the rest of the children, become participants in a mental experiment. It is noticeable that the teacher prejudiced against the guy and constantly tries to expose him in a disadvantageous light. At the same time, Peter, who loves his young man, stubbornly does not notice provocations and does not give in to them. According to the teacher's idea, Jam becomes gay, and one day Peter finds him during a love affair with their common comrade - Jack. But even this can not make the student disappoint at her beloved, because she always tries to remember that this is just an experiment.

The loss of reality in the film

The film is quite specific, and not in vain in their reviews in various forums, many viewers classify it as "an amateur movie". A little confusing is the fact that the plot lines between reality and fiction are very intertwined. Within a few minutes all the characters are in a classroom and communicate as an apprentice and teacher. Literally a second later the action moves to the bunker, where all the same characters exist already in the conditions of the approaching apocalypse, discuss and divide the places in the shelter and try to survive.

Since Mr. Zimmer himself, the teacher, also takes part in the thought experiment, he tries in any way to take his place in the bunker. His methods of achieving goals are not entirely humane, and many, especially Peter, are beginning to feel obvious negativity towards him. All these feelings and expressed tension are transferred from the mental experiment to a real classroom audience.

What was the experiment for?

After the fascinating experiment is over, all students leave the classroom. With his teacher there is only Peter, and from their conversation it becomes obvious that there was an affair between the pupil and the teacher. Mr. Zimmer could not forgive his student for the fact that she exchanged it for the most mediocre peer, and the entire experiment was not designed to make students think outside the box, but that Peter, when he saw his young man not in the most favorable situations, doubted the His choice. The actors play in this film helps to keep the intrigue to the very end, and the high-quality images make the picture really interesting to watch.
