Sampsonievsky Bridge: repairs are under way

Who did not see how bridges are raised in St. Petersburg, he lost a lot. Tourists today are very fond of this "attraction". He gathers crowds on the embankments in the center of the city. Sampsonievsky bridge connects the Vyborg side with the Stone Island. Its history begins in 1784.

Before there was an inflatable bridge, which the townspeople called Vyborgsky. About seventy years later a new wooden bridge with thirteen spans was built in its place. And only at the beginning of the twentieth century, instead of the old wooden bridge, a new engineering structure was constructed of metal under the guidance of Professor Krivoshein.

After the October Revolution, Sampsonievsky Bridge was renamed the Liberty Bridge, as required by the laws of the new rebellious time. Under Stalin, the bridge was rebuilt again. During these construction works, Sampsonievsky Bridge acquired a new metal span, which now can be planted.

The fifties of the twentieth century made a new contribution to the reconstruction of the Sampsoniev bridge. Now this structure became welded and five-span. In addition, it received a new divergent span, now Diptera. Sampsonievsky bridge in length began to make 212 meters, and in width has grown in the whole two times.


Towards the end of the last century, its massive pillars of reinforced concrete were faced with granite. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Sampsonievsky bridge was closed for repairs. But soon it was opened again. However, the Sampsonievsky Bridge, the repair of which was again required after a while, was closed again in 2012.


Since a traffic junction was built at the Pirogov Embankment on the Pirogovskaya Embankment, a new traffic scheme was introduced, which was of a temporary nature. In particular, the movement was closed entirely in both directions up to the Yevpatoria Lane. On the bridge itself, the movement also completely overlapped.
From the Petrogradsky district to Vyborgsky District, pedestrian traffic on the usual routes was decided not to overlap the bridge. It was conducted on a special crossing, laid through the construction site. However, parking and stopping of cars on all bypass routes were banned. This involved the whole period of reconstruction, which was rather protracted. The terms of opening the bridge were moved from May to December 2012.

Because of the repair, the bypass routes for private car owners were changed from north to south-east.

Now Sampsonievsky bridge again undergoes repair. But this time the repair is more cosmetic than capital. Now it is decided to paint the spans of the bridge. True, the color will not be radically changed. Spans, still, will remain gray. What will change? The paint will be of a higher quality. Experts believe that it will save the engineering structure much longer from corrosion much longer. This was announced even on local television. New bridge repairs should end by the end of July this year.
