Wood, as many centuries ago, is one of the most common building materials. It is used to build private houses, country houses. Despite its excellent decorative properties, the tree is exposed to various factors that contribute to its destruction, such as moisture, rotting, fire and insects. The article tells about the protection of wooden structures from moisture and putrefaction.

Protection of wooden buildings from moisture

Wood, being the least durable and soft material (compared, for example, with stone, concrete or metal), is more susceptible to the destructive influence of the environment. For example, the humidity that arises from the effects of atmospheric phenomena, from which mold and fungus develop rapidly on wood.

As a protection of wooden structures using chemical products and adhere to the rules of operation of buildings from this natural material. To prevent the development of fungi and mold, in a wooden building it is necessary to maintain a moisture content of not less than twenty percent. In the underground part of buildings, for example, in cellars, humidity will exceed seventy percent, which also corresponds to the norm.

Chemical protection of wood from moisture consists in the use of antiseptics. These tools experts recommend to use as prevention measures and impregnate them with wood, reaching the maximum depth of the material. Widely used antiseptics, soluble in water, turpentine or white spirit. The last two options have an unpleasant, sharp odor and are not suitable for use in suburban construction. Antiseptic, as a protection of wooden structures, it is better to choose water. It, although more expensive for the price, but has a wonderful quality: it dries in 2 hours. Then it becomes possible to apply it to the second layer. For comparison: antiseptics, not soluble in water, dry for at least twelve hours.

Protection of wooden structures from decay

Wood of different breeds differs in resistance to decay. The most persistent are larch, ash, pine and oak kernel. The fir, cedar, spruce, and beech core are quite resistant. In contrast to them, alder, aspen, and the core of birch are quickly decayed. They need special protection.

Even at the stage of production of sawn timber, the wood is dried to avoid rotting, which arises from an excess of moisture. Then complex measures are applied that exclude the harmful effects of the environment: temperature changes, condensation of moisture, freezing of wooden structures. The coating of wood with paint and varnish materials, which have waterproof characteristics, prevents atmospheric moisture. In order to protect the wooden structures from the capillary moisture, place the heat-insulating layer closer to the outer surface, and to the inside is a vapor-insulating layer.

It is necessary to divert the groundwater and ensure good air circulation so that the wood will naturally dry up. This will increase the resistance of the material to the appearance of fungi. For the same reason, shaded areas near wooden houses are undesirable. Using the planking of the walls with planks, additional protection of the tree from decay can be provided.

If the fungi began their destructive effect, then a characteristic smell appears, the structures are deformed, the density of the wood changes . Due to the rotting process, window and door openings are warped. When revealing foci of rotting, either local protection of wooden structures or their complete replacement is necessary.

To locate the affected area from the construction, remove the lining material and remove the damaged wood with special tools. Then antiseptics are put: it or paste by paste, or spraying with a solution of a surface requiring protection.
