OJSC "Nizhny Novgorod Machine Building Plant": History and Production

JSC "Nizhny Novgorod Machine Building Plant" is one of the largest defense enterprises in the country. The company became famous for the design and manufacture of artillery systems. Today, NMZ produces complex military-technical products, as well as reactors and components for nuclear power plants, including for ships with nuclear power plant.

Base

Even before the revolution, the large machine-building plant of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Krasnoye Sormovo, was nurturing plans to transfer part of the bulk production (primarily metallurgy) to another site. Only with the advent of Soviet power began the practical implementation of this project. In 1921, research work was started and design of future workshops was started. However, the plans were changed in favor of creating a defense enterprise instead of a metallurgical site.

Nizhny Novgorod Machine Building Plant (NMP) was founded in 1932 as a site for mass production of artillery systems. The first products were 76-mm guns DRP-4. They were released even in unfinished, poorly equipped shops, but the task of Nizhny Novgorod coped. In 1938 the factory designers, under the leadership of the outstanding engineer VG Grabin, presented the F-22 gun and the modified version of the USS F-22 to the government. Commission, headed personally by I.V. Stalin, decided to establish in the shortest possible time a large-scale production of guns. Before the war, more than 2,500 units were manufactured.

Development

In 1939, the efforts of Grabin and the administration at the Nizhny Novgorod machine-building plant for the first time introduced a unique model of narrow specialization of shops, allowing for the rapid assembly of tools in large quantities without reducing the quality. Thanks to the revolutionary methods of organizing production, the enterprise remained the best in the industry manufacturer of artillery systems.

After the Second World War, the plant mastered the production of newest special equipment, equipment for nuclear power plants, steam generating units for the nuclear fleet, industrial products, consumer goods. The collective was awarded 5 highest orders of the USSR.

As a joint-stock company, NMZ exists from 01.07.1992. And on April 23, 2002 the plant became a part of the Almaz-Antey concern. On 20.08.2009 the enterprise is included in the list of strategic companies.

Specialization

The main activity of the Nizhny Novgorod machine-building plant is designing, manufacturing, modernizing and operational support of radar complexes and air defense systems, artillery armament, reactor and auxiliary equipment for the fleet and nuclear power engineering of the country, including military ones.

In addition, NMP is engaged in the production of:

• Equipment for morflot;
• ANNU (steam generating atomic installations);
• Mining equipment and electrical equipment in explosion-proof design;
• Heating plants;
• Equipment for the needs of agriculture, forestry and oil industry;
• Machine tools and hoisting equipment;
• Consumer goods.
• Metallurgical production;
• Installation, adjustment and repair of heat-power, electric power equipment, power facilities.

The manufactured products are sold in three main market segments:

• Military products;
• Products for nuclear power plants and the court industry;
• Civil products.

The most important direction of the product line in the field of military hardware is the long-term participation of the Nizhny Novgorod machine-building plant in the international market of special equipment, mainly related to the implementation of air defense systems and artillery systems. Since 2012, there has been an increase in production volumes for nuclear power plants and the court industry, which amounted to about 17% of the total output. Also significantly increased the output of civilian products, the specific weight of which reaches 15%.

State defense order

In the framework of the GOZ of JSC "Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant" in recent years, the following products have been manufactured:

• Complex "Sky";
• Complex "Volga";
• Two types of chassis, equipped for the prospective complex "Vityaz";
• Antenna posts of the S-400 complex;
• The enterprise, together with FNPC NNIIRT (Nizhny Novgorod), manufactured and delivered Niobium products.

Nizhny Novgorod Machine Building Plant in cooperation with OKBM Afrikantov produces steam generating units of various designs. Together with the head unit of the State Security Committee, Almaz Antey is upgrading existing S-400 air defense systems. Today, a large-scale project for the construction of the second production line is being implemented at the NMZ. After the implementation of the plan, the capacity of the plant will increase at least twice.
