Luxurious Victoria Falls

On the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, on the Zambezi River, is the Victoria Falls, which surpasses in its width and height of Niagara. The height of the waterfall is 120 meters, width - 1.8 km.

By itself, the Zambezi is a very calm river, which changes abruptly on the precipice of the basalt plateau. The river is overthrown by five powerful streams, dropping about 550 million liters of water into the gorge in a minute. The strength of the water mass impact on the rock below is so strong that it seems that the spray turns into "steam" and forms the pillars of "smoke" of enormous height.

The waterfall was discovered by D. Livingston, a Scottish researcher who gave him the name in honor of Queen Victoria. The local population calls it "Mosio-ao-Tuna" (or "Thundering smoke") and "Seongo" (in the translation "Rainbow").

A trip to the Victoria Falls is one of the main tourist routes in Africa. This natural attraction stands in line with the Egyptian pyramids and the Cape of Good Hope.

Victoria Falls is an unusual phenomenon of nature. It was formed when the basalt was split into clumps by the tectonic forces of the Earth, as a result of which a crack was formed across the riverbed of the Zambezi River, then expanded by powerful water currents. The river waters, squeezed by a narrow gorge, boil and boil, creating a roar and rumble. Victoria Falls is only the beginning of the riverbed, which, through a close gorge, zigzags along the cracks of the basalt rocks for almost 70 km.

The strength of the water flow varies depending on the season and season. In spring, at high water, the water level in the Zambezi becomes higher, and the waterfall pours in force, becomes powerful, fast and swift. When drought, the nature of the waterfall tames, islands of land appear on the river and on the edge of the cliff.

If the waterfall swim with the flow, it seems that the water goes into the ground, because in front of him along the river you can see the "shore". Opposite the waterfall there is another rock covered with a continuous rainforest.

Victoria Falls is famous for its rare phenomenon: magnificent "moon rainbows". They are formed by refraction not only of the sun's rays, but also of moonlight. Night rainbows are especially attractive on a full moon, at a time when the Zambezi River becomes full-flowing.
