Unequivocally, you can say one thing: if you downloaded the font in the EXE extension, then immediately delete it. Fonts are downloaded only in two formats - TTF and OTF. Also, the ZIP format is allowed, but only if the font was archived.

Here is a list of sites that are one hundred percent reliable:

  • Dafont.com
  • Fontsquirrel.com
  • Fontspace.com
  • 1001freefonts.com

After downloading fonts from this site they will be downloaded in the ZIP archive. You will need to unzip them. Use any archiver for this. You can select any folder for extraction, but just remember where it is, this is necessary for the next stages of installation.

Before installing fonts, you need to do some preparatory activities. They consist in opening the necessary windows in Windows and are designed to facilitate and speed up the installation process. So, let's now talk about what windows need to open on the desktop.

Now you need to go to the "Control Panel". In different versions of Windows, this is done in different ways. If you have Windows XP, Vista or 7, you need to go to the Start menu and click on "Control Panel". If Windiws 8.1 or 10, then right-click on the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel". If you have Windows 8, then you can use the keyboard shortcut Win + X.

At this point, we need to get into the font installation service, in Windows it's called "Fonts." It is located in the "Control Panel". This is why we opened the window with the same name.

To make it easier to find the service we need, change the icon display to "Small" or "Large". Just in the category view it will be difficult to find the required item. The "View" menu is located in the upper right part of the "Control Panel" window. Find the drop-down list and select the appropriate item. Now, among all the icons and elements, find the "Fonts" service. Its icon is displayed as a folder with the letter "A" next to it.

Installing Fonts

So, before you add fonts to the Word, open the Fonts window and place it next to the one where the font folder is open. All you need to do is to drag the OFT or TTF files (depending on what fonts you downloaded) into the font window. Immediately after this, the installation process will begin. It does not last long. To make sure that the fonts are installed, find the name of the fonts you downloaded in the "Fonts" window.

You should also pay attention to the fact that often the fonts are swaying in different hypostases. So, the same font can have two more versions: italic and bold. If it is, then in the "Fonts" window, move all three files.

That's it, the font is installed. By the way, if you do not know how to change the font in the "Word" on the installed one, then it's very simple. In the program, open the "Font" drop-down list and select the name of the installed font there. To facilitate the search, they are arranged in alphabetical order.

Embedding fonts

So, how to change the font in the "Word", we have already figured out. However, it should be borne in mind that such a replacement will only be displayed on your computer and on a PC that also has these fonts installed. Otherwise, the user to whom you drop the document, will not be able to see your new font, since it simply does not exist in the system.

To avoid this, we will be helped by a very convenient option in "Word" - Font embedding. To save a document with this option, you need to go to "File" and select "Options." Then click "Save". Now check the box next to "Insert fonts to file", and in the drop-down list click on "Open document".

After this adjustment has been made, your document will be correctly displayed on all computers, however its size will increase significantly, since the fonts were embedded in the file itself. So you learned how to set the font to "Word".
