Ice Palace "Iceberg": history of creation, description, photo

Winter Olympics in 2014 changed the appearance of the famous Russian resort of Sochi beyond recognition. Loved by millions of Russians and guests of our country, the city has acquired a gloss and individuality. And despite the fact that the winter sports festival was held three years ago, thousands of tourists from all countries come here today to see the magnificent Olympic facilities. Ice Palace "Iceberg", undoubtedly, is one of them.

History of construction

Preparations for the Sochi Olympics began in 2007. At this time, the organizers instructed to design the Ice Palace "Iceberg" (then, however, he did not have this name), a group of foreign architects, headed by the Italian Alessandro Zoppini. Later, he was engaged in designing an arena for winter sports in South Korea and in Poland.

According to the idea of the author of the project, the arena turned out to be cold white. It alternated frosted and transparent glazing, as if intricate patterns on a snow-covered window. The structure resembled a giant iceberg, thanks to which it later got its name. It had clearly defined facets, although in general they were not sharp.

However, in 2009 the project was transferred to the Russian bureau. The baton was received by the general designer Andrei Bokov and Mosproject-4. It should be noted that the ice palace "Iceberg", a photo of which you can see below, was built in record time. Construction work was started in 2009. And after three years (2012) skaters competed here at the All-Russian competitions. Our athletes were pleased with the work of the builders.

Foreign figure skating masters were able to test the quality of the rink in December 2012 at the Grand Prix final. Almost at the same time and passed the tests and tracks for the short track. In 2014 the Ice Palace "Iceberg" opened its doors for the Olympians and their fans.

Architecture of the palace

Russian designers radically changed the idea of Italian specialists, with the possible exception of the ice arena itself, which remained very impressive - 30x60 meters. While calculating the further use of this structure, the architects made the original decision: they created a collapsible structure. Thanks to her, the palace can be completely dismantled, and then collected in any other place in the country. In addition, the short track can easily be turned into a cycling track.

The decision is not ordinary, but so far the design features of the palace did not have to be used, it still stands in its place. The modified design led to a change in the plasticity of the structure. If the Italian specialists waves "splashed" outside, then in the final version the building itself became a wave. The color scheme has also changed. It became more dynamic: two types of Guardian stained glass were used - the colors of the sky and transparent. They broke the facades into peculiar "pixels", creating the impression of movement. It must be admitted that this is not just a wave, it's a tsunami: six hundred tons of insulating glass is installed on the walls of the palace.

A special glass used in the construction, combines thermal insulation and sun protection: in the winter it retains heat inside, and in the summer reflects the sun's rays. Depending on the intensity of sunlight, the transparency of the glass changes. Combined with multi-layered profiles that are painted in all shades of blue, each floor has its own color, which helps viewers to navigate the palace more easily.
