How to grow onions in a plastic bottle?

What could be better in winter than the fresh greens grown on your own window sill? Growing green onions in a plastic bottle at home is very simple. This does not require special expenses or too complicated care. All that is needed is a plastic bottle and bulbs.

When do they begin to plant the onions?

Usually the onions are planted in a plastic bottle, starting from the autumn period, when there are no more on the beds, and ahead of a long winter with its beriberi. You can also grow it on green throughout the year. Especially this can be a good decision, when closer to spring, you already want green salads, and the onion begins to sprout, while spoiling. In order not to throw out and get the maximum benefit from such bulbs, they can be planted in a plastic bottle and enjoy fresh herbs, because they germinate very quickly.

Why in the bottle? Firstly, this method does not require the cost of buying special pots and trays, and secondly, this method helps not to force all existing window sills in an apartment or house onions, but to get a good yield of green mass on a fairly small area.

How to prepare a container?

Onions in plastic bottles are grown in two ways:

• The first is to cut off the side of the bottle, use it as a regular pot, with a slightly enlarged area. For these purposes, you can use as one and a half, and two-liter, as well as 5 and 6-liter capacity. Everything depends on their presence and desire.
• The second one is more convenient and profitable. For him fit 5 and 6-liter containers or even larger, which uses all surfaces of the bottle, except for the bottom.

So, in a 5-liter bottle cut off the top, where the neck and handle is located, for greater stability, it is better to cut the neck slightly higher from the point where it begins to taper. Along the perimeter of the side walls, we make round holes of a slightly smaller diameter than the bow that we are going to plant. The holes are made as close as its size allows. To measure the gaps between them, you can add several bulbs together and determine what distance from the tip to the top is required. And from each hole to lay in a side and upwards such segments.

Thus, in one bottle, standing in the usual, upright position, depending on the size of the bulbs, you can grow up to 30-60 pieces. Now just imagine how much space saves such a method!

The soil

Onions in plastic bottles can be planted in the purchase of universal soil or intended for leafy plants. It is better to avoid soils for flowering plants, since the mineral substances contained in them , which promote flowering, can provoke the growth of arrows, which are completely unnecessary. When they appear, they must be plucked, otherwise the onion will stop releasing the side tender leaves, for which we grow it.

Also, nutrient soil can be prepared by yourself, for this you need to mix the usual vegetable garden with humus, you can add peat or organic fertilizers. As a substratum for onions, wood sawdust or sand can be used, but in this case, if cultivation of onions is planned for a long time, it will be necessary to periodically feed them with fertilizers. But this method will reduce the possibility of contamination of the sill by the earth flowing out of the bottle.

The same effect can be achieved if you plant the onion in a plastic bottle tight enough, and make holes very small, sufficient only for its germination. For this purpose, water the onions exclusively in the center of the bowl, this is also necessary because the roots are located right here, and watering the ground along the edge of the bottle, you can cause rotting bulbs.

Disembarkation

Onions in a plastic bottle, in which a sidewall is cut, sits the same way as any other plant, there are no special ways for this. It is enough simply to deepen the bulb so that only a small part of the "tail" remains on top, where the green shoots appear. Completely bury the bulb should not, it can prolong the time of its germination and add dirt, as the earth will look through the holes.

At the second way of landing, having poured some land on the bottom of the bottle, it is necessary to lay the first layer of bulbs, pushing each into the prepared window. This layer is covered with earth and compacted a little. Also planted the second, third and so on layers. Having landed the last layer, on top of it it is necessary to fill up with earth, at least four centimeters thick.
