Hormonal contraceptives - benefit or harm?

Hormonal contraceptives underlie one of the most reliable methods of preventing pregnancy. It is difficult even to calculate the number of women who apply this method in their lives. It can not be argued that taking tablets is a fairly simple and effective way to protect, but there is an opinion that hormonal contraceptives cause irreparable harm to a woman's health.

Modern hormonal contraceptives have in their composition such female sex hormones as gestagen and estrogen. In tablets, these hormones are contained in different ratios. Such drugs must be taken every day. Sex hormones affect ovulation, endometrium and the properties of cervical mucus, thereby contributing to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. All the hormonal contraceptives of the new generation have an efficiency of 99.9%.

Hormonal contraceptives, produced in tablets, are divided into:

  1. Uncombined, which in its composition do not have estrogens. Such contraceptive preparations include gestagen-containing tablets, such as Kontinuin, Fermulen, Microlut.
  2. Combined, containing various combinations of progestogen and estrogen. These drugs include: Femoden, Marvelon, Demulen, Mersilon, Microginon, Ovidon, Tri-Regol, Antotevin, Triziston, Trikwilar.

Hormonal contraceptives have a number of advantages. They are one of the most effective methods of contraception. The use of birth control pills helps to bring the menstrual cycle back to normal, while the menstruation itself becomes less abundant and almost painless. The use of tablets helps to relieve the psychological discomfort caused by the need for constant care to prevent a possible pregnancy. In this case, a woman can fully realize herself in sexual relations, which has a beneficial effect on communication between partners.

There are reports of scientists that hormonal contraceptives reduce the risk of possible development of a benign breast tumor, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cyst, ovarian cancer and uterus. They contribute to the prevention of various inflammatory diseases of the genital area.

These contraceptives favor the elimination of acne (acne) and prevent hair loss. Since the contraceptive effect of combined contraceptives comes from the time of taking the pill, they are sometimes used for emergency contraception. In order for hormonal birth control pills to give almost 100% guarantee of protection, they must be taken on a strict schedule, not missing a single day.

Another advantage of taking such drugs is the rapid recovery of the possibility of conception of the child. So already a month after the abolition of taking pills, a woman has a probability of pregnancy.

Of course, like any drug, hormonal contraceptives have some drawbacks. These include the need for strict adherence to the regimen, the possibility of pregnancy with a miss at least one day, the existing probability of complications and side effects. Also, these drugs do not protect against the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

Hormonal contraceptives should be taken solely by the doctor's prescription, since they have many contraindications. It is advisable to undergo a complete examination before using the contraceptive pills, since the list of contraindications to the intake of hormonal contraceptives is very wide. The choice of these drugs is strictly individual.
