Get to Heraklion, Hanju or Sitia - it's easy, because in each of them there is an airport. Crete welcomes its guests

As a rule, the first thing that meets the traveler at the destination is the airport. Crete is no exception. For those arriving from other countries, the airplane is the most convenient way to get to the island. Moreover, the choice in this case is not great: a direct flight and a flight, after which you need to sail on the ferry. Obviously, what is given preference.

Of course, those who purchased the ticket are interested in the question of which airport will be landed. For them, this is mostly curiosity, because the organizer of the trip has already taken care of the transfer. More critical is the place of arrival for those who independently buy plane tickets. In this case, you need to understand where the nearest airport to the chosen resort is. Crete has three harbors on its territory, and this is understandable.

Firstly, the island is quite impressive, because it is the largest in Greece. Secondly, this place is very much loved by tourists, so that during the season passenger traffic is increasing at times.

Crete Airports

In a situation where there are many passengers, and the choice of available transport is limited by geographic features, the authorities have to actively develop air communication.

Heraklion. International Airport (Crete) met the first travelers in the distant 1939. Until then, you could only get to the island by ship. It was located only four kilometers from the capital of the island. With the increase in passenger traffic, there was a need for reconstruction, which was made in the nineties.

An unusual feature of the airport is the location of the runway right on the shore of the Cretan Sea. So landing here is a spectacular sight.

Meanwhile, the number of tourists continues to grow, and it is likely that by 2015 the airport will move to a new territory, located forty kilometers from Heraklion. Arrival here will be convenient for those who are planning to rest, for example, in Hersonissos. And, of course, from here you can quickly get to the southern and eastern coasts.

Chania. International Airport (Crete) came off a little later, in 1959, and in 1974 began to accept international flights. Today it perfectly complements the Heraklion transport hub. It is located 14 kilometers from the center of the same city and also in the northern part of the island, and in the season it takes a lot of charter flights, including from Russia. During its existence, the airport survived two reconstructions, the last of which was completed in 2005.

Arrive here travelers who want to relax at the resorts of the northern coast: Rethymno, Chania. The airport is also convenient to reach the western part of Crete.

Sitia is the airport of the island of Crete, until recently taking only domestic flights. However, since 2012, it began to fly and planes from other countries. The airport is located in the eastern part of the island, where new resort areas began to develop actively. So charter flights to Sitia will soon cease to be a rarity.

If we talk about its history, it began in 1984. Thus, the air harbor of Sitia is the youngest in Crete. Despite this, the airport has already experienced two upgrades aimed at increasing the number of vessels serviced.
