Fatma Sultan and the Turkish actress who played it, Meltem Jumbul

Several years ago, the Turkish TV series "The Magnificent Age" ("Muhteşem Yüzyıl") appeared. In it, it was told about the reign of the Ottoman Empire of the most revered by the Turkish people Sultan Suleiman. For four seasons the audience managed to learn and love many characters. Among them the sister of the great Suleiman is Fatma Sultan. Most viewers would be interested to know what the fate of this bright and extraordinary woman really was.

Origin of the Sultana

Fatma Sultan was the half-sister of the tenth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman. Her father was the ninth sultan Selim I, and her mother was the daughter of the Crimean Khan Mengli Giray Ayshe Hafsa. In addition to Suleiman, Fatma had three more brothers: Orhan, Musa and Korkut (they died as a child) and four sisters: Khatija, Shah, Beyhan and Hafsa.

Fatma Sultan: Biography

According to official sources, the sultana was born in 1500. When the girl grew up, she was traditionally married to one of the officials of the Ottoman Empire. The ruler of sanjak Antakya Mustafa Pasha became the husband of the sultan. Because of this, for a long time Fatma Sultan was outside Istanbul.

What happened to the first husband of this sultan, is not exactly known. The most likely version is that he was executed. However, we should not rule out the possibility of divorce, since the women of the Sultan clan in the Ottoman Empire could voluntarily divorce their husbands. True, this divorce became valid only with the consent of the Sultan.

The second husband of the beautiful sultana became the great vizier of Kara Ahmed Pasha. Subsequently, he was executed by Suleiman. It is believed that the culprit of the death of the second husband Fatma Sultan was the husband of Suleiman's daughter Mihrimah Rustem Pasha. The fact is that he had previously held the post of Grand Vizier, but was removed from it. To return, Rustem slandered Kara Ahmed-pasha and after his execution again became a great vizier.

When Fatma Sultan lost her second husband, she was fifty-five years old. She did not marry again. There is no information whether this sultan had children.

In 1570 the great sultana died and was buried next to her second husband. Five years later, a mosque was built in memory of it, which still exists today.

Fatma Sultan was a brave and beautiful woman. Unfortunately, there is not as much information about her as about her sisters, since, despite her high-ranking husbands, the sultan did not go into politics. At the same time, she was respected not only by the people, but also by the Janissaries, which, besides her, was achieved only by Kesem Sultan, who lived later.

A reliable portrait of this woman did not survive, however, according to the recollections of eyewitnesses, she was very beautiful. And with the release of the television series "Magnificent Century" for millions, the face of Fatma Sultan became actress Meltem Jumbul.

Character of Fatma Sultan in the series

In the television series "The Magnificent Age" Sultan Fatma appears only in the fourth season. Unlike her sisters, she is presented as a beautiful cheerful woman, bringing a holiday with her.

In the series Fatma Sultan (photo below) is shown by a pretty amorous woman. It is mentioned that at first she passionately loved her first wife. However, having fallen in love with another man, she betrayed her husband. The spouses did not inform Suleiman about this incident and quietly divorced. But later Fatma's husband tried to marry her again, so she poisoned him on the eve of the wedding.

Trying to quarrel with her niece Mikhrimah and her husband Rustem, Sultana Fatma falls in love with the young man with whom she was trying to bring the girl. At the end of the campaign, they were to be married, but this did not happen.

After a short while, Sultan Fatma became the wife of the great vizier of Kara Ahmed Pasha. The show shows that he fully supported the interests of the wife and was very fond of her. The Sultana herself also reciprocated with his feelings. After the death of her husband, Fatma tried to take revenge on Suleyman's wife Roksolana, who together with her son-in-law Rustem deposed her husband. However, after failing, she was banished from the capital forever.
