Many people in the world know this female character - Esmeralda. This is the heroine of the famous novel "Notre Dame Cathedral" by Victor Hugo. Esmeralda is a beautiful girl, a dancer who was stolen and brought up by gypsies. Destroyed her naivety and beauty, as well as Claude Frollo, who was in love with her. Let's take a closer look at the character of Esmeralda.

Childhood

A little girl was stolen from her mother by Pocketta by Spanish gypsies. In return, they left a child known as Quasimodo. They gave her the name Esmeralda. The character from birth was named Agnes.

Return to Paris

After the girl grew up in the gypsy camp, she returned to Paris, where she started making money with the help of dancing and demonstrating her trained goat named Jally. She had to live in a very unfortunate region, whose population was composed of gypsies, thieves, professional beggars and other rabble. But she was there in absolute safety, since all the inhabitants of her loved for kindness, beauty and spontaneity.

beauty

What kind of character is Esmeralda? This is a girl of extraordinary beauty. In the work the author compares it with an angel or fairy. Everyone who saw her was fascinated. Despite the fact that the growth of the girl was small, she still seemed high because of the harmony of her camp. Her skin was swarthy in the evening, and in the daytime she cast a wonderful golden shade, which was characteristic of the Romans or Andalusks. She had a very small leg. She walked very gracefully. In motion she seemed to dance, spinning and fluttering. Every time her sweet face appeared before someone, everyone was blinded, like lightning, by the sight of her black big eyes.

Love

Despite all the beauty that the character has, Esmeralda is a girl of limited intelligence. Although she had a life experience behind her, she was very naive. In people Esmeralda did not understand at all. That's why she fell in love with Captain Phoebe, who was an empty man. He, being the patrol chief, saved her from Quasimodo. Phoebus also felt for the girl's feelings, but they were of a different kind and were simple lust.

Despite the fact that the beauty of the girl brought income and attracted a lot of people to the shows, she also ruined her. She was also very much in love with the priest Claude Frollo and his adopted son - a hunchback named Quasimodo.

The priest was a very strong personality. He tried with all his might to fight the temptation that enveloped him, but the passion was stronger than the desire for knowledge and faith in God. In a rage, he stabbed Phoebe with a knife, and the suspicion of murder fell on Esmeralda. In addition, she was accused of witchcraft. And at that time it was worse than any other crime.

Sentence to death

The girl was seized, tortured and tried. The priest offered her help, but with the condition that the girl would love him. Esmeralda, who was very fond of Phoebe, refused him. After she was tortured, unable to withstand the pain, the girl agreed with the charges and confessed to witchcraft. She was sentenced to death, but Quasimodo saved her, pulling her out of the loop. He hid it behind the walls of that same Notre Dame cathedral.

The beggars and robbers who were Esmeralda's brothers decided to save her from the monastery, because they thought that she was imprisoned there. Thus, a situation arose that was disastrous for Esmeralda. The brothers began to take the catastrophe with a bout, and Quasimodo defended himself, because he thought that the girl wanted to grab and hang. He successfully fought back, and the king's troops later dispersed the crowd.

As a result, Esmeralda was still hanged. The fate before the execution reduced her to a real mother, who could not save her. At the wrong time the girl saw Phoebe passing by, and called him. This she attracted attention, and it was found.

Character on the screen

The eponymous film, which appeared in 1956, became the most successful screen embodiment of the girl. Actress Gina Lollobrigida appeared in a vivid image. In the film, the girl was not hanged, but killed with an arrow.

And this is not the only screen version. For example, in the 1996 cartoon the girl was not killed - so bright Esmeralda character. "Disney" - the company that shot the animated film "Hunchback of Notre Dame" - decided to leave the girl alive and make happy with Phoebe. Later she appeared in the animated series.
