BMW: body of all types. What are the bodies of BMW? Year by year: numbers

The German company BMW has been manufacturing city cars since the beginning of the 20th century. During this time, the company has experienced many ups and downs and successful releases.

This brand with a century-old history is a very complex system of indexing cars. Each body is assigned its own alphanumeric index. They depend on the body kit and the model generation. In this article we will try to understand the features of the numbers of these models. BMW's body for years, their generations - read all this further.

The first lineup

Since 1995, the company has started the production of civilian cars. The first model series did not have alphabetic indexation, but consisted only of numbers. The model number directly depended on the technical characteristics of the car. For example, the BMW 1800 model had an engine capacity of 1800 cu. cm.

A little later, the creators began to expand the model range and create variations of standard cars. To the digital index at the end were assigned letters. For example, L stands for the luxury version of the sedan, LS - sports version, and so on. Now we will understand what kind of bodywork BMW started to produce after the 70s of the XX century.

New lineup

Having replaced the entire lineup, BMW has also improved the numbering of its car bodies. These changes were associated with the release of the fifth series. All the bodies received the prefix E before the digital index. The numbering of individual versions of the model was indicated as follows: for example, BMW 525 means that this car belongs to the 5-series and under its hood is a 2.5-liter unit. Additional letters after the index indicate the type of engine: petrol or diesel.

But back to the BMW numbers. The body of the E12 is the first model in the 5-series. Four years later, the third and seventh series of the model series appear. The first were indexed by the body of E21, and the latter (luxury, representative sedans) - E23.

Since then every BMW car has received the name, proceeding from a design of the body. These were indexes with a prefix E and a two-digit number. With such a numbering, the models were released until recently, after which the platform index was replaced. But more on that later. First, let's figure out the numbering of bodies on a series of models.

1-series

The first series of BMW, whose body is also indexed with the addition of the letter E, originates from the time of the company's creation. Then this model meant sports coupes and convertibles.

The first car was the M1 with the E26 body. Now the car is considered quite rare, because at that time they were only about 450 pieces. Z1 - cabriolet, which was also included in the first series.

In 2011, the series was replenished with three- and five-door hatchbacks with the E81 and E82 indices. Also this year, the launch of the two bodies (E87 and E88), which were restyled versions of the coupe and convertible.

3-series

The first car of this series appeared with the body type E21. It was a tight 2-door coupe, which was not very popular, as it turned out to be a novelty for the automobile community. The next type - E30 was already almost an icon and predecessor of the modern style of BMW. The body became wider and more spacious, and the design was made more modern. "Troika" (E30) can still be seen on the roads in our country.

From 1990 to 2000 the company produced bodies E36 and E46, which differed little from each other. In 2004, the modern generation of the third model with bodies E90, 91, 92 and 93 appears (sedan, station wagon, coupe and convertible). The car lasted on the conveyor belt until 2011.

After that, the company decided to replace the E-body platform with a completely new one. So there was a series of bodies F. Such types as F30, 31, 34, are produced from 2012 to the present time.

4-series

This series is relatively new - its release began in 2013. In fact, this car can be considered a modification of the "troika", executed with the help of bodies F32, 33 and 36 (coupe, convertible and 4-door coupe).

5-series

The average business class in the company's model range was represented by the fifth issue. The first car came out in the distant 1972 with the body of the E12, as mentioned above. Since then, the model has survived 6 generations. Each new version became more perfect than the previous version, so now the car is not recognized.

After E12, the light saw the E28 body in 1981, which differed little in appearance. Basically, all the changes concerned the technical part of the car. The body of the E34, which came off the BMW production lines from 1988 to 1996, took a step forward compared to its predecessor - smoother lines and a whole image were created.

In 1996, the body appeared E39, which was produced before 2003. Many fans of the brand did not like this variant of the "troika". Most likely, had a restrained and unremarkable design. The body of the E60 was radically different from all its predecessors. Despite the fact that it was all the same platform, the creators managed to create something unimaginable with the design of the car. It does not look like all other BMWs (the body color in the assortment of the company was only black and silver, and all other variations are auto, repainted by tuners) and remains popular to this day. The release of this body was stopped in 2010.

The generation of bodies F10, 11 and 07 is produced now. The bodies of the BMW cars were distributed as follows: F10 - sedan, F11 - station wagon and F07 -compartment. The car has already experienced one restyling and is in great demand among motorists.

6-series

The business class coupe is manufactured since 1976. The car survived 3 generations. The first is the body of the E24, the second - the E63 and the third - the F12, which is produced in 2012. On the body this car is called a 2-door coupe. In the F13 variant, the car is a convertible with a convertible rigid roof.

7-series

This series is a representative class of BMW. Its origin it takes in 1997 and is released to this day. In this model range, the body and the platform changed six times. The first car is E23. It is followed by the bodies of E32 and E38, which were produced before 2001. From 2001 to 2008, the E65 and E66 variants (conventional and elongated bodies, respectively) were on the conveyor. This generation is the most popular and recognized of all the company's cars due to its reliability, comfort and power.

The following models were produced with bodies F01 and 02 until 2015. Starting from mid-2015, the company started production of a new generation of cars with the bodies of the G11 and 12 series. This car is one of the most expensive in service - the repair of the BMW 7 Series body, Its parts are very expensive for owners.

X-series

In this model range, crossovers by BMW are presented. The body of these cars with the index E83. The youngest of them is X1. The crossover had only two generations. In the second, it is issued to this day.

The mid-size crossover from the Bavarians is X3. Its release began in 2010 with the use of the body of the E84. In the second generation the car is manufactured to this day and is delivered to the Russian market through official dealers.

X5 - the oldest model in this series. His first generation with the body of the E53 was introduced in the distant 1999 and lasted until 2006. The body of the E70 was produced until 2013. Now the third generation with the index F15 is produced.

BMW X6 in this series stands apart. The car is a hybrid of a large 5-door hatchback and crossover. The car is produced in a single generation and a body from 2008. During this time, two restyling sessions were conducted.

Now you know the answer to the question about which BMWs were produced depending on the class and series. In addition to the generations described above, the Bavarian company also has a series Z (coupe and cabriolets) and a special sports series M. The latter should not be singled out as a separate subgroup, since the M index is a refinement of existing production models.
