The emergence of St. Petersburg
The history of St. Petersburg begins at the beginning of the XVIII century, when Peter I laid the first stones of the new settlement on the lands reclaimed from the Swedes. The year of the founding of Northern Palmyra is considered to be 1703, when the fortress of St Peter-Burkh (in honor of Saints Peter and Paul) was built, designed personally by the tsar.
The city began to grow rapidly from the side that is now called the Petrogradskaya. At the end of the year a temple was built, which was called Troitsky, and the square on which it stood was the first port of the new city.
St. Peter-Burkh stood on Zaychiy Island, connecting with the new city island with the help of a lifting bridge. Houses and buildings began to expand and occupy first the other side of the river, and then Vasilievsky Island.
Moving the capital to St. Petersburg
Since 1712, the royal court, and then most of the official institutions began to move from Moscow to St. Petersburg, this is how the city began to be called since 1720. At the beginning of the First World War it was renamed Petrograd, in 1917 he also met with this name. Well, in Soviet times, the city was called Leningrad.

- The Great October Revolution, which Petrograd saw then;

Therefore, St. Petersburg bears the unofficial name of the city of three revolutions.
During the Great Patriotic War, he stood the gravest blockade, in honor of which in 1945 he was called a hero city.
