9 most famous creative couples in history

Hardly today there is a person who would not have heard about Kylie and Taiga, Brad and Angelina, so these pairs are known for their vivid and stormy relationships. However, the alliances of the last century were definitely more impressive, especially if the partners were united not only by passion, but also by creativity. The sporadic relations of some outstanding poets, photographers and artists became cultic and remained in the memory not only of their generation, but also of subsequent ones. Here are the 9 most famous creative couples in history.

1. Pablo Picasso and Francoise Gilot

In all his life, Picasso had more than one muse that inspired him to work, but the most famous of them was the talented artist Francoise Gilot. They met in one of the Parisian restaurants in 1943, where Picasso invited her ... to take a bath. After all, hot water during the occupation was a real luxury. Picasso and Gilot were not married, but lived together fine 10 years and got two children. All this time Francoise was the artist's only muse, and he, in turn, introduced her to Cubism. However, at the end of their relationship became too tense, and the couple broke up.

2. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera

These two outstanding artists were able to reconcile themselves to each other's characters. They were married in 1929, but divorced when it became clear that Rivera had betrayed his wife with her younger sister Christina. Kahlo did not want to forgive her unfaithful husband and began a relationship with the entertainer artist Josephine Baker. A year later Frida returned to her husband, and they no longer parted to her death, which the artist called the most tragic moment of his life.

3. Alfred Stiglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe

A talented photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stiglitz became for the artist Georgia O'Keeffe both a mentor and husband. However, a successful career forced her to leave New York, where they met, and move to New Mexico, the desert landscapes which so often subsequently appeared in the pictures of the artist. Stiglitz and O'Keeff exchanged love letters until his death. In total, they wrote about 20 thousand messages.

4. Marina Abramovich and Uluay

The relationship of these artists of the performance can make anyone cry. Once Marina Abramovich and Ulai talked about themselves only as parts of a two-headed body, and their joint work became a real legend. The Union of Artists broke up on the Great Wall of China: Marina and Uly passed about 2,500 km from its opposite sides to the middle, where they said goodbye forever. Two decades later, Uly suddenly appears on the New York performance Abramovich "In the presence of the artist," and she will not be able to hold back tears.

5. Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes

The poets' relationship ended less than a year after their beginning, when Ted Hughes was convicted of treason. The parting caused Plat's extreme pain, which she tried to express in her work. Probably, complete catharsis did not happen, and she committed suicide by putting her head in the oven of a gas stove. Ted Hughes - one of the best authors of the XX century - spent the rest of his days editing Sylvia's works and composing a collection of poems full of reflections on his wife.

6. Helen Fried and Willem de Kooning

This marriage can not be called harmonious. Perhaps Fried and de Kooning learned a lot from each other in terms of art, but mutual betrayal and alcoholism influenced destructively their relationship. Artists parted almost 20 years, then to reunite. They were together until Fried died of lung cancer.

7. Man Ray and Lee Miller

Photographer Man Rei claimed that he would never take anyone as a student, but Lee Miller's model was his exception. She moved to Paris to get to him in the studio and eventually turned out to be his assistant and a muse, and then a lover. The relationship between Lee Miller and Man Rhea lasted about two years, and it was a really fruitful period. So, Lee Miller discovered the solarization technique, which they used together, and the work of Man Rhea of that period received special recognition.

8. Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner

As you know, the relations of artists were extremely unstable, which is not surprising, given Pollock's alcoholism. He was drunk even at the time of his acquaintance with Krasner. However, they were both devoted to art, and a common love for the beautiful supported their union. He did not survive only the infidelity of Pollock, upon learning of which, Krasner broke off relations definitively. A few years later, her former husband, being drunk, got into a car accident and died.

9. Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre

These great thinkers met in 1929 and lived together for 50 years. The union of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre was one of the most extravagant in the 20th century. They rejected the idea of marriage, divided their mistresses and never got children. The concepts of free will and choice became fundamental not only in their philosophical concept, but also in their personal lives. Sartre died in 1980, and Simone de Beauvoir spent the remainder of the day in an apartment overlooking the Montparnasse cemetery, where the philosopher was buried.
