For Russian dog breeders there is an industry holiday. It's called Day of the Cynologist. In Russia it is celebrated annually on June 21. It has been celebrated for 107 years by the Ministry of Internal Affairs officers who use dogs to work in the police.

History of occurrence

The proposal for the use of animals in detective work was put forward by the head of the police department in St. Petersburg, V.I. Lebedev in 1906. Three years later, the opening of the first Russian kennel of police dogs, in the same year there was a school of trainers. And after 3 years, intelligent animals began to be used to solve crimes in many provinces of the country.

Day of the cynologist in Russia is celebrated also by the military men who work with dogs. The first cattery containing military field dogs was created on the basis of the Izmailovsky Guards Regiment in 1912. His wards were preparing for reconnaissance and communications.

In 1920, the efforts of the NKVD appeared schools nurseries for training detainees of criminal investigation and cynologists. Such units were also established in the border troops, in paramilitary protection, in the People's Commissariat of Railways. So the day of the cynologist in Russia is celebrated by people of different professions.

In the first months of the Great Patriotic War, the cynologists actively joined in the fighting. The dogs provided uninterrupted communication, exploded enemy tanks, discovered and took away the wounded, found mines, guarded the rear, went to the reconnaissance, pursued saboteurs and spies, transported the goods.

Today, service dogs are engaged in search and combat activities, they are under the guardianship of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Animals in the Day of the Cynologist in Russia are awarded with certificates of honor and prizes.
