What is embroidery: basic types and concepts

There are many types of needlework, but now special popularity is gaining embroidery. As our great-grandmothers did centuries ago, so modern girls find comfort and an outlet in this uneasy but fascinating occupation.

Embroidery as a kind of needlework

What is embroidery? If you ask a young man about this, he will start telling you about a special typewriter, which quickly and qualitatively applies the desired image to the fabric with the help of threads. And he will be right, but to really understand what embroidery is, it's better to turn to older women or specialists in this field.

They all unanimously say that embroidery is a special kind of art that allows you to create beautiful patterns and ornaments on your own clothes, tablecloths, towels and other everyday things yourself. And you can even embroider paintings that will decorate the walls of your home and create a cozy atmosphere.

Of course, for many people, manual embroidery is a relic of the past. However, even the world's leading designers are not indifferent to this needlework. So, things from "Versace", "Prada", "Chanel" are decorated with exquisite handmade embroidery.

At present, cross-stitch and smooth embroidery is very popular. Handicraft shops offer a wide range of sets, schemes and manuals for embroidery.

How to embroider a cross

The technology of cross stitching is very simple. However, here, as in any case, you need perseverance and accuracy. First of all, you need to learn how to make stitches correctly. It is best to take a special fabric designed for embroidery. It is in each set, or you can ask that you cut off a piece of the right size. This fabric is divided into small squares, which greatly simplifies the work.

Embroidery with a cross is quite easy to learn, even if you have never done this before.

You can embroider a cross in different ways: from top to bottom, and vice versa, you can make the necessary number of stitches horizontally, and then go back, modifying the crosses.

In the first variant, the stitches are executed from the upper left corner to the bottom right. You can perform the manipulation in reverse order. The most important rule is to always work in one direction.

Each cross consists of two stitches. It is very convenient to immediately perform elements of a single color scheme, and then proceed with the following components of the picture. If, following the scheme, you need to retreat a few cells, then the thread is drawn from the wrong side. The following stitches are made in the same direction as the previous ones.

Even if in theory embroidery with a cross appears to you to be somewhat difficult and difficult to achieve, do not get discouraged. After all, it is only necessary to begin, and you will see that everything is much easier than it seems.

Cross-stitch embroidery is an excellent exercise before mastering the heavier embroidery techniques. We consider one of these in more detail.

What is ribbon embroidery

Lovers of the original decor will be delighted. Another interesting kind of needlework is embroidery with ribbons. For the first time this art originated in Italy, and later spread throughout the world.

Before you start embroidering with ribbons, you need to purchase the necessary material. Tapes vary in material and width. The most qualitative are silk, they look beautiful, and thanks to them you can make very small details. Satin and satin are the cheaper option, the pattern made by such ribbons looks impressive, and the details are very easy to make.

If you decided to use an atlas for embroidery, then it is advisable not to take wide ones, as the image can turn out to be rough and not very beautiful.

Embroidery with ribbons is especially attractive if corrugated varieties are used, with a width of 6 to 25 mm.

Technical requirements for work

The fabric should be sufficiently dense, so that the tapes are firmly fixed and do not violate the relief of matter. For the first time you can buy a set and embroider according to the scheme. Having stuffed your hand and got the necessary experience, try your hand at decorating ready-made clothes and accessories. Embroidery ribbons can revive blouses, T-shirts, bags, gloves, towels, tablecloths and much more. You can embroider a picture, it will decorate your house or become an excellent gift.

In addition to tapes and cloth, you will need a needle with a wide eyelet and a lighter for processing the cut ends of the tape (it is necessary that the material does not expand further). For convenience, a hoop is usually used. If you are uncomfortable, you can abandon them.

What does ribbon embroidery mean? There are several types of stitches, the simplest of which is considered straight or ribbon. It resembles the usual sewing - the needle is removed to the outside of the fabric, a stitch of the required length is made, and the needle is removed to the wrong side. Stitches can be made of different lengths, as required by the picture. Make sure that the ribbon lies flat. Only with this stitch can you create a whole picture.

We master Japanese and twisted seams

Another important type of seam is Japanese. Repeat all, as in the previous stitch, but before you bring the needle to the wrong side, pass it to the middle of the tape (you can be closer to one of the edges, so that the stitch turns out to be sharp).

With this seam, ribbon embroidery acquires the ability to display stems for flowers or a beautiful frame. This seam is very simple in execution. Remove the tape to the front side at the point where the stem is planned to end, then twist the tape several times and bring it to the underside under the flower. It turns out a beautiful '' twirled '' stem.

These are the main seams, which you need to master to understand what embroidery tapes are.

Do not be afraid to try yourself in mastering new embroidery techniques. After all, what is embroidery? This is primarily a manifestation of your creative abilities. Will you be interested in embroidery with a cross or you prefer ribbons, most importantly, do not be afraid to start, and you will succeed.
