Reviews of the movie "Pyramid". The horror film "Pyramid": reviews

All reviews of the movie "Pyramid" set out the essence of the narrative narrative quite briefly, but in a capacious manner: the mysterious Egyptian pyramids, the ancient gods wandering about, the achievements of the scientific and technical process and new exciting archaeological discoveries.

Not horror, but a dream

The creators of the film, screenwriters Nick Simon, Daniel Mirsand and director Gregory Levasseur, decided not to experiment much, and not to bypass the standards of modern horror, than they deprived their creation of a unique chance to be seen among the many like in the film industry. The sophisticated spectator should not focus on the category of "horror film" stated in the characteristics and annotations, as this is somewhat untrue. "Pyramid" is a film (reviews of professional film critics confirm this), similar to a psychedelic dream of a traveler - exciting and at the same time eerie. In the storyline, there are no scenes that are full of cruelty characteristic for this genre, or sharply frightening moments.

Incorrectly distributed timing

When watching, it creates a strong impression that director Gregory Levasseur at the very beginning of the film "Pyramid" (reviews about the film are especially underlined the next moment), guided by purely personal motives, makes a conscious curtsey aimed at covering the political component of the modernity of modern Egypt. Approximately twenty minutes of timekeeping (from one and a half hours) to the audience is shown the usual everyday routine of the life of the central characters, which is rather wretched and much like the action of a low-budget Latin American soap opera. The film "Pyramid" (reviews, reviews, comments are unanimous in opinion) did not benefit from the demonstrated clarification of the relationship and the romantic vicissitudes of the main characters in the face of leading archaeologists. Especially since the two central characters come to each other's father and daughter and, arguing about the pyramid found under the sand, begin to swear desperately, while showing the viewer quite a lean vocabulary, indicating the limitations of thinking. This naturally puts writers in an unattractive light before looking.

Plot

The horror film "Pyramid" begins with an extraordinary event in archeology. In Egypt, not far from the world-famous pyramids, another one, hitherto hidden in tons of sand, is unexpectedly discovered. I was lucky to find the American archeologists, father and daughter, all movements and actions of which are carefully documented by a group of documentaries with the help of movie cameras. And now comes the exciting moment - found the entrance to a mysterious find, but at this very moment comes a categorical order - urgently complete the expedition. It's all about the spontaneous riots in Cairo that directly threaten the lives and health of Americans. Naturally, scientists (reviews about the film "Pyramid" notice this moment as well) could not obey the order, abandon everything and leave without entering the pyramid. Naturally, for their thirst for knowledge and curiosity, the main characters will have to pay dearly.

Found footage - forever

If you try to look behind the scenes, get acquainted with the history of the film "Pyramid", everything about the film, written by the creators and critics, put together - it becomes more than clear that the picture strongly resembles the recent "Paris - the city of the dead." But the "Pyramid" loses to him in some positions - this is the inability to arouse horror in the viewer, and the wrong timing distribution between entry and action. And in one, and in the second picture, the action unfolds in a closed (enclosed) space, it is imprinted with a newfangled method - found footage. However, in the mentioned "Paris ..." this was prompted by a production necessity rather than by a whim of the director. The fact is that the whole process of filming took place in the famous Parisian catacombs, in which it was impossible to use a stationary video camera. But the "Pyramid" (reviews about the movie pretty cynically point to the following fact) - the film is economical, so in it the "effect of presence" is due to the need to save on everything. At the same time, the viewer sometimes does not understand which camera the actors work on, which "amateur camera" the episode is shot (who holds it or where it is located).

Mythology in a simplified reading

The fundamental similarity of the works of John Eric Dowdle and Gregory Levasser is the use of mythology. In the gloomy catacombs of Paris with a minimum of visual effects, all religious references and alchemy could not leave those looking indifferent. But the reviews about the film "Pyramid" point to the annoying fact that the Egyptian mythology , which is exciting for contemporaries, was simplified in the picture and reduced to human dimension. The final part of the film exploits the famous history of the ancient gods - Anubis and Osiris, but instead of letting mystery and mysticism go on, the creators for some reason decide to tell the story about Libra Truth (those from the Book of the Dead), but in the style of "Silent Hill" . This story is the culmination of the picture.

A certain charm

"Pyramid" - a film (the reviews say this frankly) to an amateur. It does not carry any special innovative discoveries, the theme is known. There is a certain charm in terms of locations, Egyptian mosaics, bas-reliefs with hieroglyphs-curses. Traditionally, the pledge of the success of such paintings - bright costly special effects, highly professional shooting and dashing twisted plot. Unfortunately, in the "Pyramid" all of the above is implemented more than modestly. But all the shortcomings (incomprehensible dialogues, illogical actions, lack of chilling moments) become insignificant in comparison with the crumpled finale, unpretentious and devoid of all morality and philosophy.

Creative Union

Alexander Aja and Gregory Levasser have known each other almost from childhood and have not worked for the first time in an alliance in the field of film horror. But, alas, the horror film "Pyramid" did not become their joint outstanding brainchild, probably because they acted in the hypostasis of the director and producer, so, naturally, they did not have a relationship to writing the script. Do not expect from the film a piercing revelation level "Maniac" with Elijah Wood. Perhaps, if the script was corrected by Gregory and Alexander, and not just trusted by inexperienced Nick Simon and Daniel Mirsand, the initial potential of mystical horror would be realized entirely. However sad it may sound, all the reviews about the movie "Pyramid" as one call it passable or entertaining at one time. For the sake of justice, it is worth noting that, perhaps, he will be interested in fans of someone from the cast.
