Mini HDMI: description, purpose of the interface

Mini HDMI - the connector is designed to transfer high-quality video and audio information with built-in copy protection protocol. Version 1.3 of this connector is characterized by increased bandwidth of this interface due to the increased synchronization frequency (340 MHz).

Description of the technology

The mini HDMI type means that this connector has a smaller overall size compared to the standard one. This is due to the current requirements of the miniaturization process. The standard connector of such interface (type A) has overall dimensions of 13.9x4.45mm, and the version of "mini" (type D) - 6.4x2.8. So the difference is quite substantial. This technology is constantly evolving, for today there are four versions of the mentioned connector, each of which uses the same hardware specification and cable. The difference is in increasing the bandwidth and type of information transmitted through the connector.

Application

HDMI mini In terms of bandwidth and functionality is no different from the usual and ordinary connector type A. That is, it contains the same 19 contacts. The main scope of use of this interface - these are portable devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, video players and video cameras, as well as many other similar techniques. A fashionable trend is the use of such a connector in video cards of a personal computer, since the space on the rear panel is rather limited. And since modern video adapters often support two universal standard DVI-I outputs, there's simply no room for an HDMI-type A interface. That's why it was decided to use a smaller version of the connector.

Mini HDMI Cable

You should know that the length of such a wire should not exceed 15 meters. Types of connectors (type A and D), provided that they are of high quality, do not affect the maximum cord length in any way. Before choosing such a cable, it is necessary to clearly determine what length is needed. To do this, you need to understand where the connected components will be installed. If you can not invest in a standard 15 meters, then it will be necessary to use several wires. However, in this case you will have to purchase additional signal amplifiers. In addition, when choosing a cord that is longer than two meters, you need to make sure that it has additional shielding, since without this option the cable will not be able to provide high-quality data transfer.

Support for mini HDMI formats

This interface is able to support all major types of video formats, including NTSC, PAL, ATSC. The resolution of the transmitted picture is in the progressive format 1440p, or 2560x1440. In addition, the standard Blu-ray and HD-DVD can transmit a maximum of 1080p. The mini HDMI interface supports a color depth of up to 48 bits, which is more than 280 trillion. The refresh rate is 120 Hz. In addition, video technology can support the following audio formats:

  • Compressed (DTS, Dolby Digital and others);
  • Multi-channel (DVD Audio, SACD);
  • Uncompressed audio (PCM): supports up to eight channels with a sampling rate of 192kHz at 24bits;
  • Compressed sound with preservation of quality (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MasterAudio).
